The first 100 orders: the channels that actually work
What to do in the first three months, when you have no traffic, no budget and no reviews. Sorted by what pays off soonest.
3 min readNo agencies, no 'link building packages', no magic. Twelve moves a small site can make on its own that still move rankings.
The SEO industry is built to sound harder than it is, because complicated sells for more. For a small business, though, 90% of the result comes from a dozen things you can do yourself over one weekend.
Here they are, sorted by effort-to-result.
If you have any local presence at all — a shop, a studio, a practice, even an address where you meet people — this is the strongest free move on the list.
The profile puts you on the map and in the "nearby" block that sits above the organic results. For many local businesses it brings more calls than the website itself.
Fill in everything: category, hours, phone, photos, services. Photos matter — profiles with photos get noticeably more clicks.
The most common mistake: the homepage tries to catch "washing machine repair", "dishwasher repair", "oven repair" and "appliance service downtown" all at once. The result is that it catches none of them.
Make a separate page per service. Each with:
Five narrow pages beat one broad one.
The <title> is that line in Google. If it says "Home", you are throwing away the most valuable 60 characters you own.
The formula that works: what + where + why you.
The meta description doesn't directly affect ranking, but it affects clicks, and clicks affect everything else.
Google measures real speed for real people. Three things give 80% of the improvement:
Check with PageSpeed Insights. If the mobile score is under 50, fix that before you write a single article.
Every phone call with a customer is a keyword. "How long does it take to dry?" "Is it safe for kids?" "Can I return it?"
Those get searched in exactly those words. Answer them on the site, in the same words they were asked. It's the cheapest way to produce content that genuinely has demand.
You say "air-to-water heat pump system". The customer searches "cheap way to heat a house". If you only write the first, you rank for a search nobody performs.
Read your own inbox and DMs. That's your vocabulary.
A few lines of invisible code that tell Google "this is a product, it costs €22, it's in stock, rated 4.8". The result is a rich result — stars, price, availability — that stands out in the list.
Most builders add it automatically. Check whether yours does.
Reviews on your Google profile directly influence local ranking. Don't buy them — just ask. The best moment is right after a happy delivery or a finished job.
Ten genuine reviews put you ahead of a competitor with two.
If you have a service page and an article on the topic, link them. It helps Google understand what matters and keeps people reading longer.
Simple rule: every new page should receive at least two links from other pages.
"500 backlinks for €100" is the fastest way to earn a penalty. The links that work in 2026 come from places with real humans: local press, a trade association, a partner, a happy customer with a blog.
Three good links beat five hundred junk ones.
A large share of searches now end in a summarised answer rather than a click. What gets into those summaries? Pages that:
Notice that this is exactly what a human likes too. Empty content now loses both battles.
SEO isn't a campaign, it's compound interest. A new page usually needs 2 to 6 months to settle. So:
Do only items 1, 2 and 3 and you'll be ahead of most small competitors. The other nine are upside — but the first three are compulsory.
Next step: the first 100 orders — the channels that bring sales while your SEO matures.
