SEO for small business: 12 things that still work in 2026
No agencies, no 'link building packages', no magic. Twelve moves a small site can make on its own that still move rankings.
4 min readWhat to do in the first three months, when you have no traffic, no budget and no reviews. Sorted by what pays off soonest.
The shop is ready. It has products, delivery, a button. And nobody is there.
This is the most demoralising phase of the whole journey and everybody goes through it. Here's an order of operations that works — sorted by what pays off soonest, not by what sounds most professional.
The first twenty orders almost always come from your own circle. Don't be embarrassed by that. Every shop starts this way, including the ones that today tell a different story.
Concretely:
The goal at this stage isn't revenue. The goal is proving the process works end to end: order, payment, packing, courier, happy human.
Now you need an audience that doesn't know you. The cheapest way is to go where people are already gathered.
Instagram and TikTok. Not "buy this" posts — the product in use. Formats that work for a small business:
Facebook groups. Every city and every niche has them. One rule: give value ten times, sell once. People smell a salesperson instantly.
Marketplaces. If your product fits, a platform with ready traffic brings the first sales immediately. The commission is high, but you're buying speed and reviews.
Here you stop hunting for new tricks and start repeating what already worked.
A Google Business profile. If you have any local presence, it's a free channel with high purchase intent. How — here.
An email list. Collect emails from day one. A list of 300 people who gave you their address is worth more than 3000 followers. One email when new stock lands brings orders the same day.
Partnerships. Another small business with the same audience and a different product. A joint post, a discount for their customers, a bundle. Zero budget.
Then ads. Only now. When you already know which product sells, which photo stops the scroll and what people ask in DMs. Advertising before that is paying for information you could have had free.
If you're genuinely ready:
€100 is not a scaling budget. It's a learning budget. If it brings three orders and one clear lesson, it did its job.
Forget dashboards. Three numbers are enough at the start:
If conversion is under 1%, stop chasing traffic. The problem is the page, and every new visitor is wasted. Ten design mistakes that kill sales is a good place to check.
A hundred orders don't come from a brilliant idea. They come from a hundred small, boring actions performed in the right order. This list is the order.
